EL CASTILLO DE SAN PEDRO DE LA ROCA

Visit one of the best-preserved castles in the Americas – an anti-pirate fortress on the coast of Santiago de Cuba.

Designed in 1587, completed in 1610, El Castillo de San Pedro de La Roca was meant to guard Santiago de Cuba against foreign enemies and frequent pirate attacks. The 200-foot high promontory sits on a series of terraces, providing sweeping views of the bay and Cuba’s coastline.

It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and is one of the best-preserved Spanish colonial fortresses in the world, surviving countless attacks, earthquakes, and natural disasters.
