PLAZA DE LA REVOLUCIÓN

Cuba’s most important plaza, featuring the José Martí Memorial and huge images of revolutionaries, Ché Guevara, and Camilo Cienfuegos.

Plaza de la Revolución or “Revolution Square” is where, for decades, Fidel Castro made public addresses, marking important holidays such as International Workers Day and the anniversary of Cuba’s Revolution. His speeches could last hours, with more than a million Cubans packed into the square and surrounding streets. Also featured on the surrounding Cuban ministry buildings are 5-story steel outlines of Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos.

In the plaza is the José Martí Memorial, a star-shaped tower that pays tribute to José Martí, whose pro-independence writings heavily influenced Cuba’s revolution. It’s the largest memorial in the world for a writer and a landmark of Havana’s skyline.
